Overview: WV e-Health Initiative (WVeHI)

Mission Statement

Medical professional with a paper medical recordThe WVeHI works with providers, health insurers, businesses, and government to facilitate the use of information technology to improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of health care for all West Virginians

Strategic Goals

The WVeHI works toward the goals of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to fulfill West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin’s pledge “to put critical health care information in the hands of doctors and caregivers at the time they need it most – when care is delivered,” putting special emphasis on encouraging the use of technology in rural areas. These are the goals of the initiative:

  1. Promote the use of electronic medical records in clinical practices
  2. Develop and oversee a statewide health information exchange network to connect doctors, hospitals, laboratories, and other health care providers
  3. Give consumers access to personal health records and the telemedicine services that are already in use in West Virginia
  4. Report health care quality measures, and collect, analyze and feed back health quality information to health care providers to improve the health of the state’s residents
