Resolution on Health Information Technology

Whereas, There is compelling evidence that health information technology (HIT) can play a critical role in addressing the challenges faced by the health care system; and

Whereas, The federal government has accelerated efforts to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of health care by putting forth a number of initiatives at the national and regional levels to promote the adoption of HIT and regional health information organizations; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That WVeHI supports the adoption of HIT and regional health information organizations that will provide information where it is needed, when it is needed, to support care; and be it further

RESOLVED, That WVeHI encourages physicians to work toward the following goals, at a pace appropriate to their practices:

  1. The adoption and implementation of electronic health records (EHRs).
  2. The adoption of e-prescribing, ideally fully integrated with the EHR.
  3. The adoption of systems providing clinical decision support.
  4. The selection of systems that comply with emerging national standards.
  5. To selection of systems from vendors that have achieved appropriate certification.
  6. The collection and use of clinical data for quality improvement and dissemination.
